Barbara Lemon

Barbara Dawn Lemon of Mifflinburg, 83, passed away October 14, 2016 surrounded by her family at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, after a brief illness.

She was born on April 11, 1933 the daughter of the late Harry R. and Blanche C. (Girton) Shaffer in Bloomsburg, PA.  On November 5, 1950 she married Harris Arthur Lemon, who survives.

Barbara was a 1951 graduate of Bloomsburg Area High School and a graduate of Bloomsburg University with a degree in Art History.  She later obtained her Masters of Reading Education also from Bloomsburg.

Barbara taught in the Mifflinburg Area School District for 32 years.  She was a member of the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, and a member of the Bloomsburg Fair Association.  An accomplished artist in many different mediums, she enjoyed ceramics, pottery, weaving, knitting, wood carving, sewing Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren, and was an award winning painter with numerous entries at the Bloomsburg Fair.  The most prized possession of all her children and grand-children were her hand made “grammy blankets”.

When Barbara and Harris were first married they resided in the farm house at the Bloomsburg Fair Grounds and were the last residents to do so.  In 1960 Barbara and Harris moved to Mifflinburg where they together took over operation of the Mifflinburg Telegraph where Barbara helped to do the accounting as well as occasionally run a printing press.  Over their 66 years of marriage, Harris and Barbara spent many happy hours at her favorite beach in Ocean City, NJ.  She also loved to travel to Disney World with her children and grand-children and was a devoted pet owner to countless cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and turtles.

In addition to her loving and devoted husband of 66 years, she is survived by a son, Mark Harris Lemon (wife, Marianne) of Mifflinburg; a daughter, Merrilee Angelique Whitney (husband, Alden) of Plaistow, NH;  grandchildren, Jedediah Lemon (wife, Briana), Sarah Lemon, Riley Galloway, great-grandson Mason Lemon, a sister, Marilyn DeSalvatore of Exton and 4 nieces.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 10 to 11 am Wednesday at the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, 279 Market Street where the funeral will be conducted at 11, with Rev. Mrs. Shirley Cornell, officiating.

The burial will be in the Mifflinburg Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Barbara’s memory to the Danville S.P.C.A., 2801 Bloom Rd., Danville, PA 17821.
