Barbara Squires Nellis, 80, of 792 Walnut Acres Road, Penns Creek, Pa., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at home surrounded by her family.
Barbara was born February 8, 1930, in Rutherford, N.J., a daughter of the late John Henry, Jr., and Elizabeth J. (Weisheit) Squires. On March 14, 1953, in "The Little Church Around the Corner" inA New York City, she married Richard Eugene Nellis, Jr., who survives.A
Barbara was a 1947 graduate of Rutherford High School and earned her bachelor's degree in history at Brenau University in 1952, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega fraternity. She was a founder of the Joseph Priestley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Lewisburg, and a charter member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Susquehanna Valley, Northumberland.
Barbara was an elementary school teacher in the Midd-West School District for nearly 25 years, beginning her teaching career at Beaver Adams Elementary in 1962 and continuing at the West Beaver, Middleburg, and Penns Creek elementary schools until she retired in 1989.
She was a member of the Penns Creek Civic Association, where she was the street fair manager for several years, and also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 57 years are one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth S. and Nancy Nellis of Washington, D.C., and two grandchildren, Andrew L. Nellis of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Molly E. Nellis of Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Merrie Nellis, 16.
A memorial service to celebrate Barbara's life will be conducted at the Joseph Priestley Memorial Chapel, 380 Front St., Northumberland, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 25, with Rev. Barry L. Stopfel officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Susquehanna Valley, 265 Point Township Drive, or Priestley Chapel Associates, P.O. Box 80, both of Northumberland, PA 17857.
