MIFFLINBURG a�" Charles Alfred Shipton, 89, formerly of 3 Shipton St., entered into rest at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born March 24, 1923, in Swengel, a son of the late William Shook and Elizabeth (Knauss) Shipton. On June 16, 1944, in Hagerstown, Md., he married the former Mary Ellen Brungard. They shared 67 years of marriage until her death on Feb. 9, 2012

He attended school in Swengel and Lewis Township and graduated from Mifflinburg High School in 1941.

Charles was a veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in the European theater. While serving in Europe he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star "for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on Dec. 8, 1944 in the vicinity of Ensdorf, Germany". " Pfc. Shipton was one of a party of five who succeeded in reducing a pillbox which had obstructed the advance of infantry troops. After the five American soldiers killed several enemy soldiers and captured 19 others the American infantry troops were able to continue the advance." In addition to the above mentioned awards Charles also received the EMAE Theater Ribbon and Three Bronze Service Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

After being discharged from the Army, Charles worked with various builders in the Mifflinburg area. In the mid 1950s, he went into business as Shipton Bros. Inc. with brother's, James and Donald. Charles was in charge of the construction portion of the business. In the early 1970s, he started his own construction company, C. A. Shipton, Inc. with his two sons, Larry and John. He went on to establish an outstanding reputation as a home builder.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg and a former member of Church Council.

Charles was a former member of Mifflinburg Borough Council, Mifflinburg Bank and Trust Board of Directors and served on the Board of Directors of Evangelical Community Hospital. He was also a member of the Trade Advisory Committee in Building Technology at the former Williamsport Area Community College. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Mifflinburg American Legion, and the Union County Sportsman's Club. He was also a former member of the Sand Run Hunting Club.

In earlier years his hobbies were hunting, snowmobiling and boating. In later years his hobbies were golfing and building live steam engines. To refine his self taught machinist skills, Charles took adult education courses at SUN Vo-Tech in machine shop during the 1980s.

Charles was an avid golfer and belonged to the Bucknell golf club where he made two hole in ones. Following his retirement, Charles golfed four or five times a week. He continued golfing until he was 84 years old. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at the "cabin" and going out to dinner with friends.

Charles built the family home on Market Street in Mifflinburg where they lived until 1976 when he and Mary Ellen went to live at their cabin in Winfield on the Susquehanna River. In 1988, he built a home at 3 Shipton Street where they resided until 2007 when they moved to Nottingham Village.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Karen Shipton, and John and Cindy Shipton, all of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Leo Weidner, of Mifflinburg; one sister, Florine Condit, of Fresno, Calif.; and one brother and sister-in-law, James and Carol Shipton, of Mifflinburg; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Charles L. and Shannon Shipton, of Mifflinburg, Brian and Stephanie Shipton, of Muncy, Renee and George Pick, of Watsontown, Elizabeth and Bill True, of Cumberland, Md., Aaron and Jackie Shipton, of Duncannon, Paul and Missy Shipton, of Mifflinburg, Jennifer and Greg Czar, of Downingtown, and Jonathan and Erin Weidner, of Chesapeake, Va.; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Barbara Shipton; and one brother-in-law, Jay C. Condit, whom he served with in the Army.

Family and friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Church of Christ, 417 Market St., Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 with the Rev. Susan Gabbard, officiating.

Burial will be in the Mifflinburg Cemetery with military honors by Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
