Donald B. Spangler, 87, New Berlin
Donald Byron Spangler, 87, of 339 Murray Lane, entered into rest at 5:12 p.m., Monday, June 3, 2013, at Riverwoods, Lewisburg.
He was born April 4, 1926 in New Berlin, a son of the late Palmer and Matilda (Kline) Spangler. On August 11, 1951, in Messiah Lutheran Church, New Berlin, he married the former Ruth E. Wittes, who proceeded him in death on March 30, 2013.
Donald was a 1945 graduate of Lewisburg High School. He and Ruth owned and operated Harmony Springs Farm and were actively engaged in dairy and crop farming. Donald was very active in numerous agricultural organizations including the Mifflinburg Young Farmers, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Union County Cooperative Extension, and Union County DHIA.
He was a life-long member of Messiah Lutheran Church, New Berlin where he was actively involved. He was a Sunday School teacher and also served as a church council member and officer. Donald was a charter member of the New Berlin Heritage Association and also a member of the Mifflinburg Area School Board.
Donald was a sports enthusiast with great interest in Penn State football, Mifflinburg High School athletics, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Donald was involved in Habitat for Humanity with several volunteer trips to the Homestead, Florida area. He also enjoyed gardening, birding, hunting, and golfing, especially with the Shade Mountain Senior League.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary Jo Spangler, of New Berlin; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Denise and Patrick Imbrogno, of Moon Township, Dianne and Lyndon Hepler, of Pitman, and Darinda and Brett Sutton, of Eighty-Four; one daughter-in-law, Donna Spangler-Boop, of Sunbury; one brother, Eugene Spangler of Mifflinburg; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Justin and (Jenna) Spangler, Kevin and (Lindsay) Spangler, Joseph and (Jessica) Spangler, Anna Spangler and (fiancAC.e' Ben Hartman), Kyle Imbrogno, Kara Imbrogno, Kayla Imbrogno, Deidre Hepler and (fiancAC.e' Michael Hess), Matthew Hepler, and Kendra Helper; and one great grandson, Brady Spangler.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Spangler in 1993; two sisters, Margaret Moyer and Evelyn Shiffer; and one brother, George Spangler.
Family and friends are welcome for a time of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc. 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg, and from 9:30 to 10 a.m., Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 308 Market St., New Berlin, where a memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald will be conducted at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Andrew Fitch officiating.
