BEAVER SPRINGS – Donald “Zig” E. Mattern, 82, a lifelong resident of Beaver Springs, entered into rest at 11:40 a.m., Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.
He was born December 6, 1932, in Beavertown, a son of the late Reed and Annie (Aumiller) Mattern. In 1962, he married the former Helen M. Dorman, who preceded him in death October 26, 2013.
Zig was a 1951 graduate of Beaver Vocational School.
He was employed at Selinsgrove Center, for over 30 years, until he retired in 1990. After his retirement, he worked at Shade Mountain Golf Course, Middleburg.
Zig was a people person and enjoyed telling jokes. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. Zig’s passion was playing golf with his friends at Shade Mountain Golf Course.
He was honored by the PIAA with a gold card for his of over 30 years of service in officiating high school soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas “Zig” B. and Lisa L. Mattern of Beaver Springs; and one granddaughter, Jenelle N. and her husband Ryan VanHorn of Middleburg.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Mattern; and one granddaughter, Erika L. Mattern.
Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at the Middlecreek Area Community Center (M.A.C.C.), 1 Elm St., Beaver Springs, where a memorial service to celebrate Zig’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m.
