Dorothy Shirk

MIFFLINBURG – Dorothy Jean Shirk, 92, of 513 Market St., entered into rest at 2:15 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2016, at her home.

She was born April 17, 1924, in Danville, a daughter of the late Glenn F. and Dorothy (Struble) Royer.  After her mother’s death, she was raised by her stepmother, Mildred S. (Moyer) Royer.  On November 23, 1945, at the St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg, she married Laird L. Shirk, who preceded her in death May 4, 2000.

Dorothy was an active lifelong member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg.

She was a 1942 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.

Dorothy was employed at Evans’ Clothing Store, Mifflinburg, and later the Ben Franklin Stores, Mifflinburg.

As a young woman, she was a member of the Mifflinburg Civic Club and the Athenaeum Club.  Dorothy served as Judge of Elections for the West Ward in Mifflinburg for many years.

Dorothy enjoyed knitting, sewing, counted cross stitch, and many other crafts.  She was very interested in genealogy and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.  Dorothy loved Christmas and enjoyed the time spent with her family.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Vaughn L. and Kathryn Shirk of State College, and W. Brent Shirk of Montoursville; one daughter, Jill A. Shirk of Mifflinburg; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jason M. Shirk of Montoursville, Rachel and Sandy Voellinger of Ashburn, Virginia, Megan and Andrew Arvin of State College, and Alexandra Shirk of Atlanta, Georgia; and 5 great grandchildren, Jason, Tristian, and Cooper Shirk, Aiden Arvin, and Miles Voellinger.

Family and friends are welcome to a memorial service to celebrate the life of Dorothy at 10 a.m., Friday, at the St. John’s United Church of Christ, 417 Market St., Mifflinburg, with Pastor Ted Justice, officiating.
