Gabriel B. DePietro, Jr., 72, Mifflinburg
Gabriel "Gabe" B. DePietro, Jr., 72, of 417 Old Orchard Lane, for over 40 years, entered into rest at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 2009, at his home.
He was born September 12, 1937, in Bryn Mawr, a son of the late Gabriel B., Sr. and Carmela (DeMarco) DePietro. On June 14, 1959, he married the former Mary Amarant, who survives. Gabe and Mary recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Gabe graduated from Radnar High School, and then earned his bachelor degree in Forrestry from Penn State University.
He was employed as a District Forrester by the Pennsylvania Departement of Environmental Resources.
Gabe was a member of the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chapter Penn State Club, Union County Sportsmen's Club, Weikert, Buffalo Valley Sportsmen's Association, Penn State Alumni Association, Mifflinburg Hose Company, Mifflinburg Fire Company Relief Association, a lifetime member of the N.R.A., and was active in Relay for Life.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, playing golf, and watching NASCAR and sports. Gabe was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who devoted his life to preserving natural resources.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 50 years, are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Perry J. DePietro of Charlotte, NC, and Philip M. and Diane L. DePietro of Irwin; one sister, Rita Holtz of Wayne; and five grandchildren, Jake DePietro, Allison DePietro, Ariel Hanson, Dana DePietro, and Max DePietro.
There will be no public viewing. Visitors may call from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg, where a memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m.
In 1987, as president of the Greater Susquehanna Valley Penn State Chapter, Gabe started an endowment that has provided scholarships to more that 70 students. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greater Susquehanna Valley Penn State Chapter Endowment Scholarship, P.O. Box 402, New Berlin, PA 17855.
