Harold E. Erdley, Sr., 80, New Berlin
Harold Elwood Erdley, Sr., 80, of 718 Vista Heights, entered into rest at 11:50 a.m., Monday, April 12, 2010, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born January 18, 1930, in Jackson Township, Snyder County, a son of the late John P. and Carrie I. (Eberhart) Erdley. On October 20, 1951, in the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Berlin, he married the former Laura A. Hummel, who survives.
Harold grew up farming in the area of Erdley's Church, Middlecreek Township.
He enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1951 until his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant, in 1955.
Harold was employed for 30 years at Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg, and 23 years for Playworld Systems, New Berlin and Lewisburg, until he retired just prior to his 80th birthday in January 2010.
He was an active firefighter and ambulance responder from 1957 to 2000. Harold was a life member of the New Berlin Fire Company, where he served a term as First Assistant Chief, many years as Financial Secretery, and marched with the Honor Guard, even after retiring from active service.
Harold was a member of the Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association, SUN Valley Scottish Rite Club, Williamsport Consistory, Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge 370, Mifflinburg, and a life member of the New Berlin American Legion Post 957.
He was a 59 year member of the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Berlin, where he served several terms on the church council.
Harold enjoyed driving his 1930 Model A in local parades.
Surviving in addition to his wife of nearly 59 years, are his children and their spouses, Harold "J.R." and Pamela A. Erdley of Mifflinburg, Debra K. and Douglas T. Navickas of Columbia Crossroads, Patti A. and Richard W. Faux of Lewisburg; five grandchildren and their spouses, Andrew J. and Abigail L. Erdley of Mifflinburg, Justin D. Navickas and fiancee' Jennifer M. Sherman of Towanda, Joseph M. Navickas and his girlfriend Stevie Silvers of Columbia Crossroads, Laura A. Faux of Lewisburg, Amy L. Faux, who was born on Harold's 65th birthday, of Lewisburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert L. and Aimee Erdley of Mifflinburg, and Richard E. and Margaret "Peggy" Erdley of Milton; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, C. Irene Kessler of Mifflinburg, I. Bessie and Willard Miller of Montandon, C. Mary and Erlyn Keefer of Milton, L. Jennie McNier of Milton; one brother-in-law, Robert and his wife Nancy Hummel of New Berlin; two sisters-in-law, Miriam and her husband Eugene Keister of New Berlin, and Mary C. Hummel.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, E. Mae and Raymond Ulrich, and Kathryn H. and James Myers; three brothers-in-law, Harold Kessler, William McNier, and Oliver W. Hummel; one sister-in-law, Helen and her husband Calvin Renninger; and one nephew, Sgt. Ray L. Ulrich.
Friends and family are welcome from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 Market St., New Berlin, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m., and also from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday,, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., with Rev. Andrew Fitch, officiating.
Burial will be in the New Berlin Cemetery, with military honors by the New Berlin American Legion Post 957.
To honor Harold's dedication and service, firefighters and EMS personnel are encouraged to attend in uniform.
