Harold "Red" L. Mertz, 83, Mifflinburg

Harold "Red" Lloyd Mertz, 83, formerly of Milton, a resident of 2 Mifflin Court, for the past 10 years, entered into rest at 9:12 a.m., Friday, April 18, 2014, at his home.

He was born May 28, 1930, in Milton, a son of the late George and Marion (Berger) Mertz. On February 15, 1953, in Milton, he married the former Mary K. Beck, who survives.

Harold was a 1948 graduate of Milton High School, where he excelled in football and basketball.

He was a member of the Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher.

Harold served in the Air Force from August 21, 1948 until his honorable discharge July 20, 1952.

He was employed as the Milton Borough Manager from 1972 until 1989. Earlier in life, Harold was employed at the First National Bank, Milton.

Harold was a member of the Milton American Legion Post 71, Milton Lion's Club, the Milton Booster Club, and the Union County Sportsmen's Club, Weikert.

He was a Little League coach in Milton, enjoyed playing softball in Milton, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sportsman.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years, are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dann A. and Donna Mertz of Millmont, and Keith A. Mertz of Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie A. and Michael Coup of Milton; 5 grandchildren, Kari, Matthew, Pattie, Dann, III, and Amy; and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald, Charles, Robert, and Herbert Mertz; and one sister, Emma Mertz.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Harold will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, Laurelton, with the Rev. Mark Messner, officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church after the service.
