Hoover E. Royer, 80, Mifflinburg
Hoover E. Royer, 80, of 243 Green St., since 1965, entered into rest at 9:45 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born September 25, 1928, in Hartleton, a son of the late Gene and Kathryn (Hoffman) Royer. On April 15, 1950, in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, he married the former Ileene Fiedler, who survives.
Hoover was a 1949 graduate of Mifflinburg High School. In 1949, he served as the manager of the high school baseball and girls basketball teams.
He served in the Army from September 30, 1946 until his honorable discharge March 19, 1948.
Hoover was a member of the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg.
He was employed at the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg, for 17 years as a paint foreman, until he retired in 1990. After his retirement, Hoover worked as a self-employed painter.
Hoover was a charter member of the Rugged Mountain Hunting Club, Haines Township, Centre County, member of the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410, and Union County Sportsmen's Club, Weikert.
He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and Mifflinburg sports. Hoover was a mentor to the boys of the Mifflinburg High School wrestling team for many years, and received an award of Outstanding Fan.
He enjoyed bowling, and earlier in life horseback riding. Hoover coached baseball from 1971 until 2008 in Mifflinburg, most recently for the West Branch Mifflinburg town team. He loved sharing time with his family. Hoover was a jokester, and could hold a great conversation for hours. He brought joy to everyone.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 59 years, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe A. Sr. and Holly S. Royer of Mifflinburg, and Jason E. "Reg" and Marcy L. Royer of Millmont; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon L. and David C. Whittaker of Mifflinburg; four grandchildren, Kyle and his wife Heidi Whittaker of Mifflinburg, Abbey Whittaker of Baltimore, Joe Royer, Jr. of Mifflinburg, and Andrew Royer of Milton; one step-granddaughter, Maredith Stewart of Mifflinburg; three great grandchildren, Libby, Lucas, and Jack Whittaker all of Mifflinburg; one step-great grandson, Caden Stahl of Mifflinburg; and special canine friend, Maggie.
He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Thelma Royer.
Visitors may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael C. Romig, officiating.
Burial will be in the Hartleton Cemetery, with military honors by the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
