J. Nelson Hackenberg, 93, Mifflinburg

J. Nelson Hackenberg, 93, of 101 E. Chestnut St., formerly of 616 Chestnut St., entered into rest at 10:05 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born September 3, 1917, in Buffalo Township, a son of the late John and Mary (Noll) Hackenberg. On July 25, 1941, he married the former Jane Diehl. She preceded him in death August 22, 1988.

Nelson served in the Army during WWII, in Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, from January 14, 1941 until his honorable discharge July 26, 1945.

He was employed as a machine operator at Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg, for many years, and worked at Weis Markets, Mifflinburg, until 2007.

Nelson was a lifelong member of Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg.

He was a member of the the 2nd Armored Division Association, and the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.

Nelson enjoyed playing golf, and watching Penn State football and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Gloria J. Hackenberg of Millmont; 7 grandchildren, William Mattern, Valerie Mattern, Dawn and her husband Greg Keister, Michael and his wife Christine Lyman, James Hackenberg, Samantha Fultz, and Nathan Hackenberg; one sister, Mary Shively; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Hackenberg of Middleburg; and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael S. Hackenberg; one granddaughter, Erica Hackenberg; three brothers, Wilbur, Harold, and Joseph Hackenberg; and two sisters, Thelma Royer, and Mae Renn.

Family and friends are welcome from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday, at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Rd., Lewisburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., with Rev. Michael C. Romig, officiating.

Burial will be in the Dreisbach Church Cemetery, with military honors by the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Rd., Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Funeral arrangements are by Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg.
