Jameson “Jamie” Lee Sauers, or lovingly known as “Coach”, 65, of 135 Johnstown Rd., Mifflinburg, crossed over into the spiritual realm Saturday, October 20, 2018, at home. He leaves behind a legacy that no one can compare.
He was born May 13, 1953, in Lewisburg, a son of the late John W. and Jeanne L. (Spangler) Sauers. On June 8, 1991, he married the former Tracy A. Wenrich, who survives.
Jamie attended Mifflinburg high school, and after graduation was drafted by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He decided to pass up the opportunity and stay in his hometown but had the honor of being asked to walk on the football team at Alabama by Coach Bear Bryant.
He started college at Youngstown State, where he had the experience of playing football with Ron Jaworski, then transferred to Wesley College where he played baseball. Jamie finished his college career at East Stroudsburg University, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Jamie returned to his alma mater, Mifflinburg High School, to teach and coach. He was the assistant and head coach of varsity football from 1976 to 1996. Jamie also coached girls basketball, boys baseball, and assisted with coaching the Milton and Lewisburg football teams. Jamie was dedicated to coaching and teaching until retirement in 2010.
He loved learning new football plays and would travel to coaching clinics in Hershey and Binghamton, where he would meet with coaches the likes of Joe Paterno to discuss coaching and make jokes with friends including Gary Hessert, John Sumner, Super Bowl winning coach Dick Vermeil, and the late Terry Gessner.
Jamie enjoyed a yearly reunion at his cabin along Penn’s Creek with friends from the community and ESU. He loved his dogs, children and grandchildren, and loved them unconditionally.
Surviving in addition to the love of his life of 27 years, are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Justin and Jennifer Sauers of Glen Mills, and Zachary Sauers and girlfriend Samantha Leib of Selinsgrove; one daughter, Abby Schnure of Mifflinburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Joel and Sharon Sauers of State College; one brother-in-law and wife, Eugene and Lori Wenrich of Enola; one sister-in-law and husband Michele and Scott Swartz of Enola; father-in-law Fred L. Wenrich; two nieces, Erica and Leah Wenrich; and four grandchildren, Macie, Madden, Lyla and Bryce.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents, is mother-in-law Shirley A. Wenrich.
Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, at the Christ’s United Lutheran Church, 13765 Old Turnpike Rd., Millmont, where a celebration of Jamie’s life service will be conducted at 6.
