John Walter

December 2, 1925 — July 21, 2015

MIFFLINBURG - John R. Walter, 89, of 9 Bogar Lane, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 21, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born on December 2, 1925 at his family farmhouse outside of Lewisburg on New Berlin Mountain Road, a son of the late Royal and Mary (Bolig) Walter. He married the former Mabel June Hoffman on November 20, 1948.  His death breaks a marital union of over 66 years.

John was a 1943 graduate of Lewisburg High School.

He had a career in dairy farming and selling DeKalb seed corn. A lifetime member of Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, John served as Consistory President and Adult Sunday School Superintendent among many other leadership roles.

John was a longtime member of Mifflinburg Young Farmers’, Pennsylvania and Union County Farm Bureaus, Buffalo Valley Grange, Union County Extension, and East Buffalo Township Planning Commission. He served as a 4-H Leader and on the Youth For Christ board as well as being active in numerous other organizations.

He received many awards and recognitions over his lifetime. A highlight was when John and Mabel June received the State Young Farmers’ Lifetime Community Service Award in 1970.

Well known for his sense of humor, John had a joke or two or more to tell no matter where he went. He had an outgoing personality and was always willing to help others.

In addition to his wife Mabel June, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roger and his former wife Peggy Walter of Columbus, Ohio, and Rodney and Rebecca Walter of Lewisburg; four daughters and sons-in-law Janet and Larry Driscoll of Seneca Falls, New York, Joanne and Gerald Lloyd, Jr. of Mifflinburg, Fay and Steve Richard of Mifflinburg, and Marlene and Jeff Johnson of Mifflinburg; 18 grandchildren Jacob and Jessica Walter, Anne and Mike Driscoll, Cassie, Jerry and Tricia Lloyd, Andrew and Doug Richard, Rachel, Sarah, Hannah and Mary Walter, Jennamarie and Destiny Jones, and Courtney, Justin and Kara Johnson.

John was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Boob and Helen Shreck; and an infant granddaughter, Heather Jones.

Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Rd., Lewisburg, where a memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, with Rev. Ruth Farrell, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in John’s memory may be made to either Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837, or SUN Home Health and Hospice, 61 Duke Street, Northumberland, PA 17857.
