Kenneth Sauers
MOORESVILLE, N.C. a�" Kenneth Sauers, 85, of Mooresville, formerly of New Berlin, Pa., entered into his eternal rest in the early morning hours of Feb. 21, 2011. "The strife is over a�" the battle won!"
The son of Mentor J. and Annie (Cornelius) Sauers, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, son, brother and friend to many. Born in New Berlin on Dec. 18, 1925, his parents as well as four brothers and three sisters predeceased him: Willard (Cy), Marjorie Turner, Anna Martin, Robert, John W. (Sam), Kathryn Wittes and George (Lewie).
Kenny attended Lewisburg High School and won his letters in baseball, basketball and soccer. Later playing baseball for the West Branch League, he became well known for his ability in center field and as a powerful switch hitter. He was then inducted into the Army in April 1944, where he served in combat with the 661st Field Artillery Battalion in World War II. He was discharged in April 1946. Kenny then spent 38 years working for Pennsylvania House Furniture, a job in which he took great pride.
Kenny married his childhood friend, high school sweetheart and loving wife, Ferne (Solomon) Sauers, on June 16, 1947, in the New Berlin Reformed Church (now United Church of Christ). He enjoyed being with family and friends, whether it meant playing cards, bowling, fishing, building furniture, spending time at his place on Lake Tillery or talking. He never met a stranger.
He was devoted to Penn State football, Duke basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a member of Morning Star Lutheran Church, Matthews, N.C.; a charter member of American Legion Post 957, New Berlin; a life member of Queen City Disabled American Veterans, Charlotte, N.C.; and a former member of the Lions Club, New Berlin.
Kenny is survived by his wife, Ferne; a son, Jeffrey D. Sauers and wife Mae, of Mooresville, N.C.; a grandson, David T. Sauers, of Bend, Ore.; a granddaughter, Rebecca Lantz Landreth and husband Tim; great-grandsons, Bayne and Mason Landreth, of Churchville, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Sauers, of Selinsgrove, Pa.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Olde Knox Commons for its care and concern over the past two years, as well as the staff at Levine & Dickson Hospice House for its care and compassion at the end of Kenny's journey. Also to friends and family who have been so faithful and supportive during the past nine years, your acts of kindness are greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Kenneth's life will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 326 Market St., New Berlin, with Rev. Dr. Gary Hackenberg, officiating.
Interment will be in the New Berlin Cemetery, with military honors by the New Berlin American Legion Post 957.
A time of fellowship and refreshments will take place at the church immediately following the committal service.
