Leon A. Snyder, Northumberland
Leon Alfred Snyder, of 660 Hanover St., Northumberland, since 1965, entered into rest at 2:07 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Elmcroft, Lewisburg.
He was born January 23, 1930, in Carbondale, a son of the late John G. and Lucille Worth Snyder. On November 23, 1955, he married the former Olive M. Printzenhoff, who survives.
Leon was a 1948 graduate of Harford High School, Carbondale, and he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce/Finance from Bucknell University in 1956. He played baseball for Bucknell University and met Jackie Robinson in the spring of 1949.
He served in the Air Force from December 27, 1950 until his honorable discharge December 9, 1954. During this time he was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Korean Service Medal. He was an airplane mechanic while serving in the Air Force.
Leon owned and operated the Sunbury Credit Bureau for over 25 years. He then worked at the Selinsgrove Center for 10 years, and the Cancer Care Center, Selinsgrove until 2010. He stopped working at the age of 80.
He was a 50 year member of the Sunbury American Legion Post 201. Leon was very active with American Legion baseball team and enjoyed pitching to the players well into his '70s.
Leon enjoyed listening to blue grass music and traveling to Washingtonville with his wife for dancing and music. He played on the Tachikawa Air Force baseball team and enjoyed attending the team's annual reunions from 1991 until recently. Spending time with his grandchildren was very important to Leon.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years, are two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Garry Benfer of Mifflinburg, and Barbara and Steve Yoder of Lewistown; one sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Wesley "Stubb" Stephens of Lenoxville; and three grandchildren, Alicia and her husband Aaron Martin of Lititz, Evan Yoder of Lewistown, and Jacqueline Benfer of Mifflinburg.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Snyder.
Family and friends are welcome from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Carrie Stine, officiating.
Burial will be in the Hartleton Cemetery with military honors by area veterans.
