Lionel E. Wirth, 72, Mifflinburg
Lionel Eugene Wirth, 72, of 74 Chestnut St., formerly of Millmont, passed away at 9:05 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2011, at his home.
He was born September 22, 1938, in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Herbert and Alda (Badger) Wirth.
Lionel was a 1957 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.
He was employed at the Sunbury Daily Item for over 30 years until he retired in 1998. Earlier in life, he was employed at the Mifflinburg Telegraph.
Lionel honorably served as a Sargent in the Army National Guards, Lewisburg.
He was an active member of the Mifflinburg Moose, until his medical issues limited his participation. Lionel frequented the Mifflinburg Sub Shop for coffee and conversation with his friends. Prior to his retrirement, he enjoyed spending time at Snyder's Lunch, in Sunbury.
In his younger years, Lionel was active in softball, bowling, golf, and fishing. He was a conversationalist, and loved heated debates. He would sometimes take the opposing side just to make an argument.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Wade Ludwig of Winfield; one granddaughter, Kara Ludwig of Winfield; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Gordon Wirth of Northumberland, Herbert and Ruth Wirth of Mifflinburg, and Gary and Barbara Wirth of New Berlin; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Edna Swalwell of Matlacha, FL, June Hoffman of Mifflinburg, Delores and Robert Mayer of Millmont, Nancy Milke of Mifflinburg, and Kathleen and Charles Pursell of Penns Creek; many nieces and nephews; and many friends, including the Down's family of Mifflinburg.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John Wirth; and two sisters, Marion Sauers and Helen Long.
A private graveside service will be conducted at the convenience of the family at the Lincoln Chapel Cemetery, Laurelton.
Memorial contributions may be made in Lionel's name to a charity of the donor's choice.
