Martha J. Barber, 75, Mifflinburg

Martha Jean Barber, 75, of 5503 Buffalo Rd., for the past 40 years, peacefully went home to be with her Lord with her family at her side, at 6:54 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after a long and courageous battle with her health.

She was born March 13, 1939, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Ralph F. and Kathryn (Dershem) Erdley. On January 22, 1961, at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, she married Grayden W. Barber, who survives.

Martha was a devoted, lifelong member of the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, where she was a member of the former Star Sunday School class, and was active on the kitchen committee.

She was a 1957 graduate of Lewisburg High School and 1960 graduate of Williamsport School of Nursing.

Martha was employed as a Registered Nurse at Williamsport Hospital, Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, and Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Earlier in life, she worked at the Bucknell Bison Restaurant, Lewisburg, and J.J. NewBerry's, Lewisburg.

She was a member of the Union County Democratic Women's Club, Homemaker's Club, Woodmen of the World, and the Faith, Hope, and Charity Rebekah Lodge #15, where she held many offices including serving as a state officer. Martha was a former Dutchmaid clothing representative, and an Avon representative for 29 years.

Martha's family was her life, especially her grandchildren, who knew her as "Grandma" and "Mema". She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's school and sporting events, and baking them buttermilk pies, baked apples, and homemade sauerkraut.

She also enjoyed camping, gatherings with family and friends, cooking, and baking.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 53 years, are two sons and daughters-in-law, David F. and Diane M. Barber of Dillsburg, and Brian A. and Cindy A. Barber of Mifflinburg; one daughter, her beloved caregiver, Kathy E. Barber of Mifflinburg and her companion Corey L. Flood of McClure; four grandchildren, Ashlee, Zackary, Brandon, and Kaitlyne Barber; two adopted grandchildren, Michael and Rebecca Flood; one aunt, Ida Louise Conrad of Lewisburg; 2 nephews, and 1 niece.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles F., R. Dale, and Ned E. Erdley; two sisters, Ellen Mae Shaffer and Gloria L. Hallock; 1 nephew; and 1 niece.

Family and friends are welcome from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Rd., Lewisburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., with Rev. Michael C. Romig, officiating.

Burial will be in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
