Mary Maxey Goodenow of Lewisburg, formerly of Mifflinburg, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, March, 16 at Evangelical Community Hospital.
Mary was born on April 20, 1926 in Montrose, PA the daughter of the late David Rexford and Myra (Mentzer) Maxey.
She was a graduate of Montrose High School and then attended Temple University where she graduated as a Registered Nurse, and Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
She began her long nursing career as an operating room nurse at Temple University Hospital, served as the Nurse Supervisor at Buffalo Valley Nursing Homeand then spent more than two decades as Mifflinburg Area School District School Nurse.
Mary enjoyed flower gardening and was well-known for her backyard full of brilliant orange, pink, and white poppies. She was a prolific knitter and loved making winter hats for children. Baking, reading, and traveling were among her other favorite activities.
Surviving are her sister Margaret Finn of Scottsdale, AZ; son, William Geoffrey Goodenow of Lewisburg, PA; son, John D. Goodenow of Dewey, AZ; son, Thomas M. Goodenow of Belle Isle, Florida; daughter, Carol A. Hollister of Mifflinburg.
Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Weldon,and her brother, William Maxey.
Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, and 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11, with Rev. John Yost, officiating.
