Mary Ellen Shipton, 86, Mifflinburg
Mary Ellen Shipton, 86, of 3 Shipton St., from 1988 to 2008, entered into rest at 11:00 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland, where she had been a resident for the past 4 years.
She was born February 23, 1925, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Ralph and Miriam (Wagner) Murray. From the age of 2, she was raised by Verdie and Paul Brungard of Mifflinburg. On June 16, 1944, in Hagerstown, Maryland, she married Charles A. Shipton, who survives.
Mary Ellen was a 1942 graduate of Mifflinburg High School, where she was an accomplished pianist for the choir and musicals.
She was an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg.
Early in life, Mary Ellen worked as a clerk at Koons Hardware, Mifflinburg. Later, she was secretary for her husband at C.A. Shipton, Inc., a building contractor.
She was a past member of the Mifflinburg Civic Club and Mifflinburg Atheneum Club.
Mary Ellen was a wonderful entertainer, displaying her love for cooking and baking. She was recognized as the Sunbury Daily Item Cook of the Week in 1955, featuring her custard pie.
She was an avid cross stitcher, and made quilts for each of her grandchildren.
Mary Ellen enjoyed spending time with her family, completing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, and going out for dinner with Charles and their friends.
Surviving in addition to her husband of over 67 years, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Karen Shipton, and John and Cindy Shipton, all of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Leo Weidner of Mifflinburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Mary Lee Murray of Lewisburg; 8 grandchildren and their spouses, Charles L. and Shannon Shipton of Mifflinburg, Brian and Stephanie Shipton of Muncy, Renee and George Pick of Watsontown, Elizabeth and Bill True of Cumberland, Maryland, Aaron and Jackie Shipton of Duncannon, Paul and Missy Shipton of Mifflinburg, Jennifer and Greg Czar of Downingtown, and Jonathan and Erin Weidner of Chesapeake, Virginia; and 14 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Murray.
Family and friends are welcome from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, at the St. John's United Church of Christ, 417 Market St., Mifflinburg, with Rev. Susan Gabbard, officiating.
