Mary Louella Thompson, 88, formerly of Schencks Grove Rd., Howard, entered into rest at 4:12 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Riverwoods, Lewisburg.
She was born July 14, 1935, in Jacksonville, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Ralph and Eleanor (Tyson) Orr. On June 6, 1953, she married Paul D. Thompson, who preceded her in death October 27, 2014.
Mary was a 1953 graduate of Howard High School.
She was employed at Woolrich Woolen Mills for over 15 years. In addition to sewing, Mary enjoyed a variety of other arts and crafts, such as crocheting, quilting, coloring, and baking. She had a love for the holidays—decorating the house and cookies, listening to Christmas music, making and giving handmade gifts, and preparing meals and treats for all the family to enjoy. Always encouraging another helping and another dessert, even after you had said no several times, Mary embodied the spirit of caregiving and extended this warmth and generosity to many throughout her life.
Mary enjoyed the simple things in life—walking around Howard Dam, planting and caring for her flowers, canning and freezing foods, feeding and watching the hummingbirds, and sitting on the porch with Paul to enjoy the view from their Howard home.
She will be fondly remembered for her warm smile, sweet tooth, and infectious giggle.
Surviving are four sons and three daughters, Larry (Carol) Thompson of Shepherd, Montana, Donna (Douglas) MacLean of Mechanicsburg, Steven (Barbara) Thompson of Painted Post, New York, Wayne (Jane) Thompson of Huntingdon, Karl (Angie) Thompson of Huntingdon, Judy Thompson Ebeling of State College, and Amy Thompson-Ferguson of Evanston, Illinois; one sister, Doris (Arthur) Boone of Berwick; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Helen Wynn, Edward Orr, William Orr, Herbert Herman, and Ted Tyson.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am, Wednesday, June 19, at Schencks Cemetery, Howard, with Rev. David Dearing, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a pitcher of iced tea, pour yourself a glass, go outside with friends and family, and enjoy the view, just as Paul and Mary often did, welcoming others into their home to do the same.
Arrangements are by Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg.
