Melvin "Mel" Swanger

October 12, 1955 — January 8, 2024

Lewisburg

Melvin "Mel" Swanger, 68, of Lewisburg, entered into rest at 5:15 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2024, at his home.

He was born October 12, 1955, in Lewisburg, a son of Beatrice (Raup) Swanger of Lewisburg and the late Harold Swanger. He graduated from Milton Area High School in 1973, where he played football and was a pole vaulter on the track team. He completed his education with a degree from Williamsport Area Community College in 1975.

He was employed as a diesel mechanic with New Penn Motor Express, Milton, for 41 years, until his retirement in 2022.

On September 16, 1977, Mel married the love of his life, Cindy L. Fisher, and his death breaks a marital union of 46 years. Together they raised two children, son Jesse and daughter Andrea. He was a proud father and his children brought him great joy. Mel loved attending their sporting events, celebrating their college graduations, and the family enjoyed their vacation trips and time spent together.

An avid hunter, Mel enjoyed the outdoors. There was never a ‘bad day’ when he was at the cabin. He also enjoyed umpiring baseball and softball games, grilling, and playing cards with longtime friends. Mel loved and cherished being a second father to all of his children's friends and family. Mel always gave a helping hand to everyone, near and far, in countless building and repair projects. He was strong in his beliefs, generous with his time, and always willing to help. He will be greatly missed by all who are blessed to know him, love him, and call him son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 46 years, Cindy, are one son, Jesse Swanger of Mifflinburg and partner, Dan LaMere of Crown Point, IN; one daughter, Andrea Mark, wife Lindsey Mark, and their daughter Riley Burke of Wayland, New York; one brother, Ronald Swanger of South Carolina; and two sisters, Julie Fedder of South Carolina, and Geri Beth Riden of Maryland.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Swanger.
