Specialist Michael Stephen Kroner, 27, of Mifflinburg, died Thursday November 10, 2011, in Bamberg Germany.
He was born May 4, 1984, son of Eric Kroner of Spring Mills, and Darlene Okkerse-Swope of Watsontown. He was the husband of Amber Rauch Kroner.
Michael graduated from Mifflinburg Area High School Class ofA 2003 and worked in construction until January 28, 2009 when he joined the United States Army. He attended basic combat training atA Fort Jackson , South Carolina and subsequently completedA Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri . He was then transferred to Bamberg Army Base in Germany in the 535th Engineering Company, 54th Engineer Battalion. He was deployed to Afghanistan and served in a Route Clearance Platoon stationed in Ghanzi Province where he served with distinction and honor . Specialist Kroner's awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, The Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on TerrorismService Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, and the NATO Medal. He also receivedA the Combat Action Badge for his part in combat operations during his tour in Operation Enduring Freedom XI
Specialist Kroner was loved and respected by all that knew him. He was a very caring and selfless person to those that served with him. Michael was always thinking of others and often put his own issues aside to help fellow soldiers. His dedication to the mission and his fellow comrades showed true through overwhelming odds and diversity both in the garrison and in combat. Michael took his job very seriously and would not let failure be an option. He was harder on himself than others were. Michael's humor brought laughs when you would think laughing not possible. His caring spirit lifted up his friends when they were in need, and his friendship turned into family ties with many of those he served along side.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one sister, Jennifer Kroner of Mifflinburg; one brother, Jonathon Kroner of Watsontown; grandparents John and Marylou Okkerse of Lewisburg; and his dog Ellie.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lawrence and Virginia Kroner.
Funeral Services with full military honors will be held at Christian Missionary Alliance Church, 80 Church Road, Mifflinburg, at 5:00 p.m., Monday November 28, 2011, with Pastor Chester Musser, officiating.
