Ray B. Ard, 99, Lewisburg

Ray Burton Ard, 99, a resident of Elmcroft, Lewisburg, formerly of 395 Johnson Mill Rd., went to be with his Lord and Savior at 9:47 a.m., Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Elmcroft.

He was born June 24, 1910, in Haines Township, a son and only surviving triplet of the late Joseph B. and Grace C. (Kyser) Ard. On April 16, 1933, he married the former Mabel Elsie Hosterman. She preceded him in death March 22, 1992.

Ray attended the Penns Valley Schools up to eighth grade, before leaving to go to work at the Millheim Silk Mill.

While residing in Millheim, he purchased three International trucks and was a trucker along with his wife and brother-in-law, Lee Saxon. Several of the projects he worked on were the National Airport in Washington, D.C., the Dam at Howard, and most consistently hauling coal to the International Paper Company in Lock Haven.

After his retirement from trucking, he and his wife purchased the Twin Kiss Drive-In, now The Purple Cow, Lewisburg, and moved to Toppins Hill Farm, Lewisburg. He sold the business in the 1970's, and he then held a part time job in auto parts, and enjoyed riding horses, raising all kinds of animals, and growing trees.

Ray and his wife regularly adopted children from the Christian Children Fund and were even visited by one of the children after she left the orphanage in India and traveled to the United States.

He is a member of the Mifflinburg Alliance Church, Old Fort Charity Lodge, and Williamsport Consistory.

Although he and his wife never had any children of their own, he his survived by those who knew him as dad. Sister-in-law, Amber Bailey of Millheim. Juanita and Victor Evans of Lewisburg, their daughter Gretchen Norton and her husband Jeff, and their two daughters, Bailey and Addison of Lewisburg. Wanda and Glen Gerhab of Pleasant Gap, and her son Eric Bailey of Astoria, NY. Other surviving family include brother-in-law, Lee Saxon of Millheim; nephew Ray M. Ard and his wife Nancy of Lewisburg; neice Mary Lou and her husband Johnson Miller of Mifflinburg; 5 nieces; 4 nephews; his best friend and care provider, Deb Carson of Lewisburg; and the rest of his breakfast bunch, Marjorie DuVal, and Jerry Sachleben.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson Ard, and Harold Ard.

Visitors may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Mifflinburg Alliance Church, 80 Church Rd., where the funeral will be conducted at 6 p.m., with Rev. Glen Bayly, officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Fairview Cemetery, Millheim.
