Richard E. Nellis, Jr., 81, Penns Creek
Richard Eugene Nellis, Jr., 81, of Walnut Acres Road since 1953, died at 5:50 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2011, at RiverWoods Senior Living Community, Lewisburg.
He was born May 8, 1929, in Staten Island, New York, the son of the late Richard Eugene and Laura (Whitford) Nellis. On March 14, 1953, in "The Little Church Around the Corner" in New York City, he married the former Barbara Squires. She preceded him in death September 18, 2010.
Richard was a 1952 graduate of Cornell University, majoring in economics. He then earned his Masters Degree in economics at Bucknell University in 1968, and his Ph.D in economics at The Pennsylvania State University in 1977.
He was a founder of the Joseph Priestley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Lewisburg, and a charter member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Susquehanna Valley, Northumberland.
Richard was employed as the Advertising Sales Manager at Wood-Mode, Kreamer, from 1952 to 1959, and as the Production Manager at Walnut Acres, Penns Creek, from 1962 to 1968. He then served as the Assistant Professor of Economics at Williamsport Area Community College until 1975. Richard was Chief of the Policy and Planning Division of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission where he worked from 1977 until his retirement in 1989.
He was active in many community services, including the Snyder County Agricultural Land Preservation Board, charter member of the Penns Creek Area Lions Club, Past Director and Secretary of the Center Township School District, Founding Member and First President of the Center Township Civic Association, Penns Creek Volunteer Fire Company, and Past Scout Master of a local Boy Scouts Troop.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth S. and Ann "Nancy" Nellis of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Andrew L. Nellis of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Molly E. Nellis of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Nancy-Linn Nellis of Stockton Springs, Me.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Wing.
A memorial service to celebrate Richard's life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 16, at the Joseph Priestley Memorial Chapel, 380 Front St., Northumberland, with Rev. Ann Keeler Evans, officiating.
