Robert D. Ruhl, 85, Mifflinburg

Robert "Bob" Daniel Ruhl, 85, of 99 E. Market St., since 1957, passed away at 8:44 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born October 18, 1924, in Mifflinburg, the son of the late Daniel and Florence (Thompson) Ruhl. On July 14, 1946, in the Mifflinburg Lutheran Church, he married the former Mary Kathryn Shoemaker, who survives.

Bob was a 1942 graduate of Mifflinburg High School, where he was an avid athlete.

Following high school graduation he enlisted in the U.S Army Corp of Engineers. After training in engineering school, Bob was assigned to the 112th Combat Engineers and was eventually assigned to the 1st Platoon of the 254th Combat Engineers. This particular unit was referred to as the "Snorting Bull Battalion" or "Iron Men" for their various engineering feats that served to defeat the enemy.

On D-Day, Bob and his battalion participated in the famous campaign on Omaha Beach in the battle of Normandy, where they established the beachhead that served to support a successful infantry attack. He also participated in campaigns in Northern France, the German Rhineland , Luxemburg and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded several medals including the Bronze Star for valor, Bronze Arrowhead and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.

Following World War II, Bob was employed by the Pittsburgh Division of the Postal Transportation Service and was later transferred to Harrisburg where he worked until mail service was removed from the trains. He then transferred to the U. S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg. Shortly after mandatory retirement, Bob began assisting the grounds and maintenance staff at the Mifflinburg School District and in 1984 was assigned to the New Berlin Elementary School where he spent 19 enjoyable years with the students and staff.

During the past several years, Bob was an active member of the Lewisburg Bible Church and enjoyed spending time reading the Bible. He also spent countless hours in his garden where he raised an impressive array of produce.

Surviving in addition to his devoted wife of 64 years, are three daughters and one son-in-law, Mary A. Gage of Waterville Maine, Elizabeth A. Ruhl of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and Wendy J. and Kenny Zechman of Laurelton; 6 grandchildren and their spouses, Daniel and Karen Gage, and Amy and Adam Caldwell, all of Maine, Kenneth and Bethany Zechman of Millmont, Kathryn and Joe Keefer of Liverpool, Lisa and Shane Heeter of Kunkletown, and Emily and Bradley Swartz of Liverpool; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Edward, Clair, Kenneth, Glen, and Earl Ruhl; and one sister, Dorothy Hassinger.

Family and friends are welcome from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, at the Lewisburg Bible Church, 311 Hospital Dr., Lewisburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, with Pastor Roger Wenger, officiating.

Burial will be in the Mifflinburg Cemetery, with military honors by the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that you donate to your favorite Veteran's organization or to the Lewisburg Bible Church, 311 Hospital Dr., Lewisburg, PA 17837.
