Ruth E. Spangler, 84, New Berlin
Ruth Eleanor Spangler, 84, of 339 Murray Lane, New Berlin, entered into rest at 11:30 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Riverwoods, Lewisburg, where she had been a resident for the past year.
She was born in New Berlin on August 21, 1928, the daughter of the late Roy and Dorathea (Nagle) Wittes. On August 11, 1951, at the Messiah Lutheran Church, New Berlin, she married Donald B. Spangler, who survives.
Ruth was a 1945 graduate of Lewisburg High School. In her early years she was employed at the Dutch Pantry, Hummels Wharf, and after raising her children she was a seamstress at TaraLee Sportswear in New Berlin. She and her husband Donald owned and operated Harmony Springs Farm and were actively engaged in dairy and crop farming. Ruth was active in the Union County DHIA and Union County Crop Association for many years.
She was a life-long member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, New Berlin where she served as a Sunday School teacher and on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Lutheran Church Women's group and the Red Hatters.
Ruth was a charter member of the New Berlin Heritage Association and was chairman of the annual Chicken-Bar-B-Q for New Berlin Heritage Days for many years. She had a great interest in the history of the New Berlin area and authored many articles for local historical groups.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary Jo Spangler of New Berlin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Patrick Imbrogno of Moon Township, PA, Dianne and Lyndon Hepler of Pitman, PA and Darinda and Brett Sutton of Eighty Four, PA; daughter-in-law Donna Spangler-Boop of Sunbury; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Julie (Adams) and William Breon of Selinsgrove, and Doris and Frank Brouse of Selinsgrove; 10 grandchildren , Justin and ( Jenna) Spangler, Kevin and (Lindsay) Spangler, Joseph and (Jessica) Spangler, Anna Spangler, Kyle Imbrogno, Kara Imbrogno, Kayla Imbrogno, Deidre Hepler, Matthew Hepler, and Kendra Hepler; and one great grandson, Brady Spangler.
She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Spangler in 1993; and three brothers, John Wittes, James Wittes and Robert Wittes.
Family and friends are welcome for a time of visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 308 Market St., New Berlin, where a memorial service to celebrate the life of Ruth will be conducted at 10 a.m., with Rev. Andrew Fitch, officiating.
