William “Bill” A. Ely, 77, of Weikert, entered into rest at 7:24 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2024, at home.
He was born December 10, 1946, in Lewisburg, a son of the late William D. and Natalie J. (Harne) Ely. On January 21, 1970, in Orlando, Florida, he married the former Nancy J. Kolp, who survives.
Bill was a 1964 graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School and a 1979 graduate of the Hershey Police Academy.
He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict from 1966 until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1970.
Bill was employed as a police officer by Milton Police department for 21 years, until he retired as Corporal in 2000.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Montandon American Legion Post 841, Union County West End Social Club, and the Union County Sportsmen’s Club, Weikert.
Bill enjoyed hunting with his best friend, Robert Correy, and taking trips to Minnesota with his family, and hunting and fishing. He was an avid Penn State football fan.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. and MaryAnn Ely of Vienna, Virginia, and Ronald W. and Clara Young Nam Ely of North Potomac, Maryland; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Keith Books of Dauphin; seven grandchildren, Amelia, Ash, Christina, James, Kevin, and Eric Ely, and Virginia Books; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Sue” Ely of Mifflinburg.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert M. Ely.
Family and friends are welcome to a memorial visitation from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, October 21, at Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg, where military honors will be accorded at 12:30.
