Memorial events are gatherings for family and friends to celebrate the life of a loved one either after a funeral service or in place of a funeral. Summertime allows the opportunity for a beautiful outdoor setting to honor the memory of the deceased. We’re here to help you plan that successful gathering and inspire you with some ideas to take advantage of the summer weather.
Choose a date:
As always, weather can be unpredictable. If you are considering an outdoor summer memorial service, be sure to have a back up plan in case it rains. Did your loved one have a favorite day this time of year? Maybe a date of significance? Consider planning your event around that date. Birthdates, death dates, anniversaries, or family traditions could all be good ideas for choosing a memorial date.
Event Ideas:
With any event, a theme is always a great form of inspiration. With it being summertime, consider making it a picnic or a BBQ. Gather at a park, in a backyard, at the gravesite or the ash-scattering location.
Don’t forget the food:
Common refreshments are expected at any memorial event. If you’re having a picnic or BBQ, consider having salads, fresh fruit, sandwiches or burgers. You may also want to consider having a potluck, where everyone brings a dish to pass. This can be a great way to save money if you’re on a budget, and save yourself extra stress on a day that will already mentally take a toll.
Decorations:
You may think decorations are for parties only. Memorials are no exception. You’re celebrating the deceased, so why not decorate it with flowers, photos and other season appropriate decor.
Ceremonies:
The ceremony may also be a part of the memorial. This may include scattering the ashes, planting a tree in their honor, having a fireworks display, a reading or eulogy, or releasing flowers in a stream, lake, or ocean.
Some families also like to have a memorial similar to that of a fundraiser. Everyone who attends can raise money towards the deceased’s favorite charity.
**Please be cautious of the environmental impact your ceremony will have. Balloon and lantern releases are no longer recommended. Use biodegradable materials whenever possible.
